According to our Gold FM archive Karangahake Hall burnt down 9 years ago today, September 7, 2011.
A truck driver raised the alarm when he was driving past in the early hours and noticed flames.
The hall was well alight by the time fire fighters arrived. They reported seeing the red glow in the early morning sky as they travelled from Paeroa and Waihi.
It’s believed an arsonist, who has still not been identified, was responsible for the fire that destroyed the hall.
Luckily insurance helped cover the cost of building a new community hall which opened on June 9, 2018.
The original community hall was built in 1957 and held regular markets, local sports activities and hosted a variety of community activities.
