Brian Gentil spoke with Marcus Howie about his ‘weekend off’ first up on the Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts GoldStar. It strangely entails refereeing a game of rugby. Marcus explained the Secondary Schools playoffs are on with all the sides vying for a finals position next weekend, and he’s reffing one of the games.
He also mentioned what a great night it was last Tuesday with the girls Grand Final being played, and he ran through the results.
Brian and Marcus talked about the Provincial Cup opening round this weekend, with some great match-ups to start the delayed season. The revised draw has games a little earlier, like the Super Rugby Aotearoa, which has proven successful. Sadly there are limited numbers of spectators allowed at games at present with the Covid-19 restrictions in place, but as Marcus says, you’ve just got to live with it at the moment so we can drop to the next level.
The game between Waikato and Wellington in Hamilton on Saturday afternoon is a highlight, while Marcus and Brian have both picked Bay of Plenty to beat Taranaki in their away game first up.
They finished with a look at the All Blacks and Jack Goodhue signing up until after the 2023 World Cup. And there’s likely to be news this afternoon, Friday, about The Championship, whether it will go ahead, where and when. Word had it as we wrote this that Australia might end up with the competition based there, as their Covid-19 restrictions are a little more relaxed than New Zealand’s.
Thanks to Harcourts GoldStar, in Thames, Paeroa, Waihi and Waihi Beach, proud sponsors of the Gold FM Rugby Report.
