On the Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star Marcus Howie, Rugby Development Officer with Thames Valley RFU, joined Brian Gentil to run through the results of all the games played across the weekend.
Marcus headed to Rotorua’s International Stadium last Friday with the Thames Valley Under 23 team. They played the curtain-raiser game coming up against a Bay of Plenty side that was well drilled Marcus said. He said it was a good learning curve and the team got the opportunity to watch the Bay of Plenty side take on Auckland in the Provincial Cup afterwards which was great.
Brian and Marcus then focused on the results of the Provincial Cup matches, including the Ranfurly Shield challenge. And off north it goes after Hawkes Bay, who beat Canterbury last weekend, had another great game this time against brief holders Otago, winning 29 - 9. Marcus says the Magpies really seem to like the closed roof stadium in Dunedin, and he mentioned Northland has a chance at taking the log of wood off Hawkes Bay in a couple of weeks time when they visit McLean Park in Napier.
Other results saw an upset with North Harbour, winless to date, beating top ranked Tasman 40 - 24, and Waikato just managed to hold out Southland in Invercargill in wet conditions 10 - 9, but a win is a win Brian said. Canterbury were too good for Wellington although it was a tight game, finally winning 31 - 26. And the Northland Taniwhas beat visitors Taranaki 35 - 25.
Brian and Marcus had a brief look at the first Bledisloe Cup game between Australia and the All Blacks that’s coming up this Sunday too.
Thanks Harcourts GoldStar - Thames, Paeroa, Waihi and Waihi Beach for supporting rugby.
