A mass stranding of whales has happened at Northern Coromandel.
DoC says a pod of between 40 to 60 whales were sighted swimming close to shore in shallow muddy water at Northern Coromandel this morning.
Some of the whales, roughly 25, have sadly stranded on the mudflats, the rest are being shepherded out to sea.
Department of Conservation rangers are being assisted by Project Jonah volunteers, the rural fire brigade and local iwi who are currently keeping the whales cool and wet, waiting for the next high tide at 9 pm.
DoC says while they appreciate the public’s concern, the best thing people can do is stay away from the site to allow them to do their job.
