Recall to manage Listeria risk in some salmon products

Posted November 06, 2020

New Zealand Food Safety is advising the public to return Prime Smoke brand Smoked Salmon Shavings sold at 14 New World and Pak’n Save supermarkets in the North Island, due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria can make people sick (listeriosis) if they consume contaminated food.

To protect consumers, Hororata Foods Ltd is recalling the affected products from shelves.

New Zealand Food Safety national manager food compliance services Melinda Sando says, only one specific batch of Prime Smoke brand of Smoked Salmon Shavings is affected.

“Look for the batch number 13012608F on the sticker on the back of the packet of the Smoked Salmon Shavings (100g).

“If you have the affected product return it to the supermarket for a full refund or cook thoroughly.”

“Listeriosis can be serious, and potentially life-threatening, among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems and elderly people.

“Smoked salmon is on the list of foods that pregnant women should avoid unless it is heated until piping hot (over 70 degrees Celsius).

“For those in the high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of 2 to 3 weeks (or longer) before symptoms appear. Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

“No reports of illness have been received, however, if you have consumed any of this product and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice.

“This food recall does not affect any other Prime Smoke brand products or any other products from Hororata Foods Ltd.”

The product is sold at the following supermarkets in the North Island.
