The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star on Friday saw Brian Gentil catch up with Marcus Howie, the Rugby Development Officer with the Thames Valley Rugby Football Union, and talk cricket first up! Marcus is an avid fan of cricket and he explained it was his summer passion.
Marcus and Brian moved on to the National Provincial Cup finals with two great games this weekend. Friday night Hawkes Bay plays at home at McLean Park in Napier against Northland, the Magpies versus the Taniwhas. While Northland has had a good season, both Marcus and Brian think Hawkes Bay at home will be too tough an ask for the men from the winterless north.
And tomorrow, Saturday night, Auckland take on Tasman in the other final. With the game at Eden Park Marcus was quick to mention the West Indies cricket side take on the Black Caps tonight, Friday, in the first of the T20 series, and then there’ll be a quick temporary turf change overnight for the rugby tomorrow at 7.05 pm.
And the All Blacks playing on Saturday night in the Tri Nations series has them coming up against a fired up Argentinian side. Coming off a draw last weekend with Australia, and a their first ever win against the aB’s the weekend before, they’ll be keen to continue with another win. Marcus also mentioned they’ll be fired up after the sad passing of Diego Maradona, their best ever player, earlier this week at the age of 60. The country is in the midst of three days of mourning so the Pumas will be wearing black armbands in respect of their fellow countryman.
Marcus also mentioned the passing of French rugby player Christophe Dominici earlier in the week, at just 48. He was one of the players who played in the semi final of the World Cup in 1999, scoring a blinder of a try on the wing in their 43 - 31 win over the All Blacks that day.
And Marcus ended with a suggestion Gold FM runs a Cricket Report during summer as he’ll be following the Black Caps and White Ferns closely over the coming months, and played quite a bit of top cricket himself in the Wairarapa (apparently over a hundred games) ‘a year or three back.’
Worth a thought?!
