The Gold FM Fire Call Out with Chief Fire Officer Moe Stevens started with Brian Gentil asking about the station siren that had a few people wondering what was going on yesterday when it went off, well almost. Moe explained that it is on its last legs and they are waiting for a station upgrade soon to see what they do about a replacement. Brian asked about the other means they have of contacting volunteers in emergencies. Moe said they had three forms of communication for exactly this reason.
Brian asked Moe about the station upgrade and when the last one was. The reply from Moe was “in about 1964 so it’s a little overdue probably”. While they’re keen for some improvements to bring the station into the 21st century, and there are plans going to and fro with head office, the things they want seem to cost too much money.
There was only the one call out since last week’s report on Thursday, which was what the siren tried to go off for yesterday, Sunday 10 January, at 5 pm. They headed to Bowentown Boating and Fishing Club where the alarm had gone off. Moe explained Waihi has a bigger engine and also a tanker to assist in these sorts of situations, but they weren’t required as it was a false alarm. Good news.
Brian asked Moe about the volunteers training nights resuming, which Moe said would be when the Christmas tree comes down and they spruce the station up and begin their training nights again. That will be at the beginning of the last week of the month, leading up to the long Anniversary Weekend.
