On the Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star Brian Gentil talked with Scott Day, Thames Valley Rugby Football Union Rugby Development Officer, starting with the preseason games held last weekend.
Scott plays for Whangamata and their game against Taumarunui Eels started badly when the visiting side’s fullback broke his ankle badly and had to be helicoptered to hospital. The game continued 20 or so minutes later on another field with Whangamata coming out victors 14 - 5. Scott said it was good to get some game time to help with match fitness.
The local season gets underway in about 4 weeks time. The other friendly was cancelled after Katikati defaulted against Mercury Bay.
Brian and Scott then focused on the Six Nations with Wales looking good to take out the Championship, after beating Italy 48 - 7. But it depends on the next couple of weeks and how other games pan out. France had to put one game off due to Covid 19 and if that gets played it could make a difference. But if Wales win against France this weekend, with a bonus point, Marcus reckons that should seal the trophy for Wales.
Then it was on to the Super Rugby Aotearoa games with the same score line in both games. Saturday night the Chiefs visited the Crusaders, and while they started strongly couldn’t maintain that momentum for the whole game. Trailing 11 - 10 at half time they couldn’t match the in form Crusaders who made it three wins from three.
And Sunday afternoon’s game at Eden Park was won by the home side Auckland, 39 - 27, with an impressive performance against the Highlanders. Scott mentioned the depth of the Auckland side with some big names coming off the bench, he reckons this coming weekend’s match against the Crusaders is going to be a real battle.
