Police are urging drivers heading to their holiday destinations tonight for Easter to take it easy.

There has been one fatal accident on State Highway 27 in Kaihere this evening.

There has also been a serious crash on State Highway 2 in Mangatawhiri at 9.20pm, and one person has died.

There has also been a serious crash on State Highway 2 in Mangatawhiri at 9.20pm, and one person has died.

Eastbound detour: at SH1-SH2 interchange, continue southbound, exit at Mercer, turn left onto Koheroa Road, turn right onto Mangatawhiri Road, continue onto Rawhiri Road, re-join SH2. Westbound detour: exit SH2 at Mangatawhiri, turn right onto Koheroa Road, turn left onto Mangatawhiri Road, right onto Lyons Rd, left onto Paparimu Rd, continue onto Paparata Rd, left onto Bombay Rd, right onto Mill Rd and join SH1

Traffic is gridlocked between Kopu and Whangamata and Police urge motorists to be patient and to not take any unnecessary risks.
