The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star on Friday morning was a mixed bag covering everything from junior rugby to Super Rugby Aotearoa, and included the first weekend of Senior Rugby around the Thames Valley.
Thames Valley Rugby Football Union’s Scott Day talked with Brian Gentil about junior rugby getting underway shortly, catering from 4 year old boys and girls up. The main thing is to get them out on the field and enjoying the game Scott said.
School rugby begins just after the second term starts Scott said, and things are warming up with training already underway throughout the region.
Brian and Scott then went through the H G Leach Club draws for both Thames Valley Senior B and Senior A games this weekend, kicking off another exciting season that hopefully won’t be interrupted by Covid-19, like last year. Scott plays for the 2020 Championship winning side Whangamata and said their team was a little disappointed that Paeroa had defaulted due to illness and unavailability of players. Apparently they are heavily involved in a 7’s Tournament so they have found it hard to get the numbers needed to play both that and the Thames Valley competition.
Scott and Brian checked out the two Super Rugby Aotearoa games this weekend, with the Highlanders hosting the Chiefs, and the Hurricanes at home against the Crusaders, who are coming off a bye weekend. The Chiefs have this weekend’s bye and will no doubt be watching the other teams closely. The table is tight at the top with the Crusaders only four points out front at the moment.
