The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star was a busy one with plenty of games on across the weekend, both locally and nationally.
Scott Day, the Thames Valley Rugby Football Union Rugby Development Officer joined Brian Gentil and started with a Secondary Schools’ 10 aside Invitational Tournament in Te Aroha tomorrow with teams from locally and around the fringe involved.
Brian and Scott talked about the junior rugby on around the region this weekend, and some good weather is a bonus.
The H G Leach Senior Club Rugby Competition was next, starting with the Senior B’s. Scott ran through the draw for round two, again with better weather conditions than last week.
The Senior A’s have some great lineups, with Whangamata taking the field for the first time after winning by default last weekend. Scott wishes he could get out on the field today. They’re at home up against Waihi who are coming off a loss last week. Unfortunately Paeroa is still heavily involved in a sevens tournament and can’t field a team, so Hauraki take 5 points without getting their jerseys on.
Brian and Scott both agreed with the winners this weekend in Super Rugby Aotearoa, well they hope they win. Friday night the Highlanders host Auckland Blues under the roof in Dunedin. The Blues will be too strong, just, Scott says, and Brian said ‘the Blues are from the North Island so I’ll back them’.
And on Saturday night, as Brian described it, ‘it’s the game of the round’ with the Chiefs hosting the top of the table Crusaders. Both Scott and Brian think the Chiefs will do it, even if it’s just a penalty between them for Scott. And listen to Brian’s comment abut the strange habit of the Chief’s coach?!
The injuries keep stacking up with a number of players out for the season and Scott and Brian talked a little about the concerns for players, with some sidelined for the rest of the season.
