On the Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star, Brian Gentil spoke with Scott Day, Rugby Development Officer with Thames Valley RFU, about the H G Leach Club Rugby Competition, starting with the Senior B’s. Last weekend saw some good games played around the district with just one of the four home sides winning. Round 2 of the club competition gets underway this coming weekend.
The Senior A Competition was next in the spotlight with a Friday night game under lights with Hauraki North hosting Thames to kick things off. Thames came away with the points after a close 25 - 23 win in Waitakaruru. Scott explained Whangamata’s loss to neighbours Mercury Bay as a lesson from last year’s runners-up, with a 59 - 7 scoreline. Scott says the playoffs will be this weekend with the draw out soon. We’ll talk more about these games on Friday’s Gold FM Rugby Report.
The Super Rugby Aotearoa games saw the Chiefs Damian McKenzie landing four penalties and two conversions, including a penalty just on full time, for a total 16 points for the game, which saw the lead change several times, with a final score of 26 - 24 to the Chiefs. Scott was pleased the Chiefs won, even if he was proudly wearing his bright yellow Hurricanes jersey at Waikato Stadium on Friday night. And the Crusaders at home against the Auckland Blues was pretty much a one way affair with the home side cleaning up comfortably 29 - 6.
The Crusaders are into the final as are the Chiefs, who play Auckland next week at Eden Park. Will the bye this coming weekend be a good thing for the defending champions?
Scott and Brian touched on the news just out that the the All Blacks will be playing Wales on October 30 in Cardiff, who will also play South Africa, Fiji and Australia as part of the Welsh Autumn Series.
