The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star was busy with everything from a Ripper Rugby Tournament to the launch of the Trans Tasman Super Rugby Competition to talk about with Scott Day. The Rugby Development Officer with Thames Valley Rugby Football Union has been working hard on junior rugby and on Wednesday next week about 24 teams will play in a Ripper Rugby Tournament in Ngatea.
The H G Leach Club Rugby Competition has some great games this weekend. The Senior B’s all kick off at 12.30 pm with the Senior A’s at 2 pm. That is except for the Waihi v Hauraki North game which was played on Thursday night under lights in Waihi, with the visitors winning 30 - 7.
Scott and Brian then looked at the Trans Tasman Competition which kicks off tonight, Friday, with two great games. The Highlanders are hosting the 2021 Australian Super Rugby Champions the Queensland Reds, with Scott thinking they will be too tough for the New Zealand side. Brian went with his heart, as usual, and will back the Highlanders. Hopefully a big crowd will back them tonight too, with kick off at 7.05 pm. The second game tonight is between the Waratahs and Hurricanes, both the bottom sides in their recent competitions. That sets it up for a great game Brian said.
Scott looked ahead at tomorrow’s games as well. There are three to look forward to; the Crusaders take on the Brumbies, last week’s losers to the Reds, at 7.05 pm, followed by the Rebels at home against the Blues at 9.45 pm. Brian recommended you check your chip and dip supplies, and other refreshments, with a third game at 11.55 pm. Western Force has the home ground advantage in Perth for their encounter with the Chiefs. Scott says he thinks the Chiefs will be too strong, and he’s interested to see how Damion McKenzie does starting at number 10. It’s been very effective in the past, and leaves Bryn Gatland on the bench to join the game a little later. Brian mentioned you can’t keep a good man down, and it was great to see Liam Messam warming a spot on the bench too.
Listen for all the results on Monday morning’s Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star, in Thames, Paeroa, Waihi and Waihi Beach at 8.35 am.
