The Whitianga Volunteer Coastguard service responded to a call for assistance from a 36 foot launch at 8 pm on Friday after the boat hit a rock and began taking on water.

The four people on board made it safely to the ‘Rock in the Bay’ after abandoning the launch where they were rescued by the crew of NZCTRESCUE.

Whitianga Volunteer Coastguard warns mariners out on the water in the area to exercise extreme caution over the next few days.

Waikato Regional Council has been monitoring the launch since it sunk on Friday night, (21 May 2021) in Humbug Bay near Whitianga.

The vessel is carrying about 200 litres of marine diesel oil.

Maritime officers onsite yesterday said there was no evidence of discharge.

Three to four metre swells may push the launch up onto the rocks.

Salvors have been advised and are preparing to recover the vessel as soon as reasonably practicable but is weather dependent.
