The Gold FM Football Report on Monday with Carters Contractors started with Rudy Sas and Brian Gentil checking on the Years 7 and 8 Waihi College game against Otumoetai in Tauranga, followed by the First XI and their home game against Hillcrest. Both had a loss but will learn from the experience Rudy said, and the First XI are still in the grading stage so it won’t affect them for the season.
The Waihi Reserves travelled away to play Huntly Thistle. They ended up losing 6 - 0, which reflected the fact they had just the bare 11 players with no reserves.
Meanwhile the Waihi Seniors won 1 - 0 with an 89th minute goal the difference between them and visitors Morrinsville. They are currently second on the table and haven’t lost this season to date.
The Wellington Phoenix were running hot on the weekend with a 3 - 0 win in their first home game for quite some time. 24,000 plus turned up to see them play. And Ufuk Talay has signed on for another two years as their coach which Rudy thinks is a good thing; some stability. They have a busy schedule this week traveling to play Western City Wanderers on the other side of the Tasman on Wednesday, and then on Sunday at ‘home’ at Eden Park in Auckland up against Perth Glory.
There were some English Premier League games played early on Monday morning which Brian and Rudy talked about. Manchester United had a win, an unconvincing one according to Rudy, against Wolves 2 - 1, while Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 2 - 0. Manchester City had a good win against Everton 5 - 0 and West Ham beat Southampton 3 nil.
Brian asked Rudy about the other two games of interest this week, especially this Thursday morning if you are a Man U fan. They’re in the final of the Europa League playing Villareal with kick off at 7 am NZ time.
The other game is between Manchester City and Chelsea, playing in the final of the Champions League Cup starting at 7 am on Sunday morning NZ time.
