Waihi College equestrian riders proved that team work and hard work pay off after they achieved outstanding results in dressage, show jumping and cross country at the North Island Secondary Schools 2 Day Horse Trial event at the Taupo Equestrian Centre last weekend.

As this was the first major event the team had competed in their goal was to go, learn and have fun. Never in their wildest dreams did they imagine they would be coming home with a placing at a major event.

Summah Mathers (Year 9), Evah Carey (Year 9), Daisy Burgess (Year 9) and Emma Knight (Year 11) exceeded their expectations and their personal best dressage scores. Clear show jumping rounds combined with fantastic cross country course results also contributed to Waihi College Equestrian Team achieving 9th place overall.

Being united in their team focus to remain cool, calm and collected got noticed and the girls earned the ‘Team Spirit Award’ for their empathy and support for each other during the two day North Island Secondary Schools competition.

Team supporter and proud mum Allison Mathers says Coach Bethany Sharfe from Synergy Equestrian deserves huge thanks and credit for sharing her wealth of knowledge and always being at the end of the phone offering advice when the girls needed it the most.

All the best for your next event team Waihi!
