The Global Liveability Index is compiled by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a company that says it has one of the largest and most experienced analyst teams in the world.
EIU claims to help corporates, the financial sector, governments and academic institutions to understand how the world is changing and how that creates opportunities to be seized and risks to be managed.
“This year, Auckland in New Zealand rose to the top of the index owing to its successful approach in containing the covid-19 pandemic. Its society largely remained open and the city scored strongly on a number of metrics including education, culture and environment.”
The livability index ranks cities based on more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
New indicators such as stress on health resources, restrictions on local sporting events, theatres, music concerts, restaurants and schools were added to the analysis of liveability this year due to the pandemic.
