Mining company OceanaGold has announced they intend to apply for consent approvals to develop a new underground mine at Wharekirauponga, in the Coromandel Forest Park, and construct the related infrastructure required to support the new mine.

In July 2020, OceanaGold published a Waihi District Study which outlined possibilities for new mining, processing, and storage facilities in and around Waihi.

They subsequently announced their intentions to develop Project Quattro and the Wharekirauponga exploration tunnel. Since then they have undertaken further technical and exploration studies, which have confirmed the viability of an underground mine at Wharekirauponga.

The new project has been named the Waihi North Project.

The proposed Martha Open Pit Project (formally known as Martha Open Pit Phase 5) will continue to be progressed and consented separately.

OceanaGold says, if consented to, these projects will extend operations to 2037 and beyond.
