The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star started with Brian Gentil asking Scott Day, the Thames Valley RFU Development Officer, about the junior rugby development camp on over the school holidays for about 60 year 7 to 10 students who don’t have representative rugby anymore, to give them a taste what it would be like to be in a professional environment.
Scott and Brian ran through the Thames Valley Swamp Foxes squad which has just been announced, with Scott congratulating several players he knows personally. They get to start training for their preseason game coming up early in August, with the Heartland Competition kicking off on August 21.
The semifinals are being played this weekend for the H G Leach Club Competition and Brian and Scott checked out the Senior B games first. Thames are at home against Mercury Bay, Cobras have been awarded their game against Paeroa after Paeroa defaulted unfortunately. Waihou take on Hauraki North while Coromandel has the home ground advantage against Waihi Athletic.
The senior A semifinals have unfortunately had some defaults which Scott ran through how that has affected the games and will bring us up to date with who has made the finals on Monday morning.
The game between Tonga and Samoa is like a curtain raiser on Saturday afternoon, although it’s being played at Mt Smart Stadium and not in the deep south where the AB’s are. Scott says both sides will both be keen on winning but he thinks Samoa may have the edge.
And the All Blacks take on Fiji at 7.05 pm in Dunedin on Saturday night. Brian and Scott talked about the team makeup, with Aaron Smith captain for the first time, Brodie Retallick back and nervous, Beauden ‘black eyes’ Barrett and his encounter with Ethan Blackadder and a team with quite a few changes from the side that took on Tonga last weekend.
Scott wrapped up with a look at the Secondary School Rugby Finals Day tomorrow at Hugh Hayward Domain in Ngatea. At 10 am Whangamata Area School takes on Waihi College with more games after that leading up to the Coulter Cup Final at 1.30 pm between Paeroa College and Mercury Bay Area School.
