The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star on Friday started with Brian Gentil asking Scott Day, the Thames Valley RFU Rugby Development Office, about the junior development camp they held on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Scott said about 60 or so young up and coming players from around the region got a hands on experience with coaching and playing tips from the likes of Ross Cooper and others. Scott said it was a great success and they’ll run something again in the future.
Brian and Scott checked out the H G Leach Club Rugby Competition Finals for both the Thames Valley Senior A and B Competitions. The games are being played at Rhodes Park in Thames with the Plate Cup kicking of at 12.25 pm between Cobras and Waihou. The Lawrence Memorial Cup is up for grabs as well, with Thames too strong at home against visitors Coromandel Scott thinks.
The Senior A final is between Thames and Mercury Bay starting at 2 pm with one side holding the McGlinchy Cup being held aloft by the winning side on Saturday afternoon.
Brian and Scott ended with a look at the two international games being played in Hamilton on Saturday. First up Tonga and Samoa meet again after Samoa took the honours last week.
And the All Blacks come up against Fiji for a second week in a row as well, with both sides working on improving areas of their game this week. Both Scott and Brian think this could be a closer game this weekend.
Brian asked Scott on his thoughts on the new laws being trialed starting at the end of this month. Scott’s quite excited with how it should speed the game up, and said the Heartland Competition will be running with these new laws so it should be good for spectators to see how they work as well as the teams. Brian mentioned it would be interesting to see which sides pick up on the rule changes early and take advantage of them
