The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star was chock full of rugby games being played across the weekend, with some more midweek next week as well.
Scott Day, Thames Valley RFU Rugby Development Officer joined Brian Gentil and checked out the National Provincial Championship games first up. This is the first weekend with some interesting matchups. As Brian said, it’s even-stevens for all the sides at the start of the competition, and it will be interesting to see how the sides shape up over the next few weeks.
Scott checked out the 8 games being played at Whitianga with the second week of competition for the Shaw Cup and Fleming Shield on Saturday. He recommended people to get along to watch of they want some top rugby action.
Boyd Park in Te Aroha hosts three great games on Saturday. Scott said at midday Thames Valley Under 18’s take on Ngati Porou Under 18’s who were arriving on Friday night and staying at a local Paeroa marae. At 12.15 Thames Valley Emerging Players, previously the Development Squad, kick off against Waikato Divisional 15, with the Thames Valley Swampfoxes getting some more game time preseason when they take on New Zealand Universities at 2 pm. Their Heartland Competition starts in a couple of weekend’s on Saturday August 21.
The report then focused on the All Blacks game against Australia at Eden Park on Saturday night. This will be a step up for the All Blacks after their opening matches this season against Tonga and Fiji, and Coach Ian Foster has apparently picked his top side to start. Brian said it shows the depth of the side when you see all three Barrett brothers on the bench.
