The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star on Monday September 6 started with Brian Gentil asking Scott Day, the Thames valley RFU Rugby Development Officer, about local rugby and the chance that the Swampfoxes will get to start their season in the middle of this month. Scott confirmed their opening game is now Saturday September 18, and if we get to Alert Level 2 there may be some other local rugby as well. Let’s hope!
Scott then brought us up to date with a World Cup match qualifier played yesterday between Canada and the USA, with what some say is an upset after Canada won 34 - 21. So now the USA has to win the second leg by 13 points or more Scott said.
The Bledisloe Cup / Championship Competition game between the All Blacks and Australia in Perth on Sunday was a great game Brian said. Scott agreed, with some amazing tries. Jordy Barrett’s sending off was discussed and the fact NZR is looking at challenging the red card. Brian mentioned Beauden would be rubbing it into his brothers that he’s the only one of them who hasn’t been sent off as an All Black.
The Ioane brothers, Reiko and Akira had outstanding games with Akira running like a back. Scott said he has a knack of fending off players and creating openings for the AB’s that he seems to do with no effort.
The Championship is the focus for the next few weeks and Scott and Brian looked at this coming weekend’s game between Argentina and the All Blacks, while Australia takes on the World Champion South African side. All this will take place in Queensland with three different venues for the All Black games.
Scott is hoping to have some more news on the local front in particular on Friday, once New Zealand knows what alert level we’ll be at.
