Karangahake Hall burnt down 10 years ago today, September 7, 2011.
A truck driver raised the alarm when he was driving past in the early hours and noticed flames.
The hall was well alight by the time fire fighters arrived. They reported seeing the red glow in the early morning sky as they travelled from Paeroa and Waihi.
It’s believed an arsonist, who was never identified, was responsible for the fire that destroyed the hall.
The Karangahake community hall was built in 1957 and held regular markets, local sports activities and hosted a variety of community activities.
On Saturday, June 9 2018, a new hall on the same Karangahake Gorge site was officially opened after hard work by a dedicated committee.
The new hall cost $497,000 to build, funded by an insurance payout and quickly became a local centre for markets and community activities.
