On the Gold FM Football Report with Carters Contractors Brian Gentil asked Rudy Sas from Waihi Association Football Club about the junior and college football now we are down to Alert Level 2 with Covid-19. Unfortunately it’s all finished Rudy said, although they are waiting to hear what happens with the First XI school games and Rudy will have more news on Friday about this.
Rudy brought us up to date with the Waihi Senior Reserve team and how their season has two games to go. This weekend they play away against Claudelands Cuckoos and the following weekend they have their last game of the season at home, another clash with Claudelands Cuckoos, a catch-up game that was postponed earlier in the season.
Meanwhile the Waihi Senior A side won by default after their game against Te Awamutu last weekend, their last of the season, was cancelled when the opposition said they couldn’t field a team. So Waihi got three points, and so did the Northern United Humblebees as they were yet to play them as well.
The situation is that the Northern United Humblebees are two points behind Waihi, who are at the top of the table at the moment, but the Humblebees have a game in hand. They need to win to take over at the top from Waihi. A draw or loss against Claudelands Rovers Vets by the Humblebees will see Waihi win the season in their league. Fingers crossed the Claudelands side can draw or win this weekend.
Rudy and Brian talked about the Plate Cup Knockout Competition which Waihi is still involved in, and these games will be back on soon.
And Brian mentioned the annual Waihi Football Club’s Labour Weekend Tournament, which Rudy will have more information on soon.
The English Premier League games across the weekend saw some great goals, and Rudy started with Christiano Ronaldo who scored two for Manchester United in their 4 - 1 win over Newcastle. Brian mentioned the other goals were pretty good too. Rudy and Brian ran through a lot of the results and looked at the table, where Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool are all on 10 points after 4 rounds, just one point ahead of Man City, Brighton and Tottenham.
Brian asked Rudy what he thought of the idea of holding the World Cup every two years rather than four. Rudy thinks from an up and coming players perspective it might make it easier to be seen, but can they sustain the hype every two years is the question that needs to be asked.
Brian and Rudy touched on the Champions League games coming up midweek and Brian asked Rudy about his son Mason, whose Hamilton Wanderers team wasn’t having a game last weekend … but did, a friendly against Ngaruawahia. They’re waiting to see if Auckland will drop from Alert Level 4, as at the moment a lot of their games can’t be played as the teams are based in the Auckland district.
