On the Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star on Friday morning Brian Gentil spoke with Scott Day, Thames Valley RFU Rugby Development Officer, starting with an update of a couple of rep games played in Waihi on Thursday afternoon. Both the Thames Valley Under 16 side and the Secondary School Girl Vixens played Bay of Plenty sides in testing weather Scott said.

Unfortunately the Emerging Players game against a Waikato side has had to be postponed with the Covid Alert level in Hamilton not allowing that game to go ahead right now.

The Thames Valley Under 18 team play the curtainraiser to the King Country game against Whanganui in Taupo on Saturday. They take on King Country with kick off at Owen Delaney Park at 2 pm.

Brian and Scott talked about the Heartland Competition starting with the Thames Valley Swampfoxes away game in Greymouth against Buller. Scott ran through the team and thinks they should do alright again this weekend, and hopefully maintain their second position on the table, or possibly go past South Canterbury if they lose to East Coast. The odds are against that happening with East Coast yet to rack up their first win, although they did put up 31 points last week so they know how to score.

Scott and Brian checked out the other Heartland games as well, including King Country, who haven’t won a game yet this season, getting a helping hand from All Black Captain Sam Cane. He’s switched to King Country for seven days before reverting to Bay of Plent, who have a bye this weekend, so he can get back on the field before rejoining the All Blacks for the game against the USA in a fortnight.

The NPC has changed due to the Auckland teams not being able to rejoin the competition with their current Covid Alert Level restrictions. Brian and Scott worked their way through the games on this weekend, with a beaut to kick things off on Friday night between hosts Wellington and Canterbury. Scott mentioned it will be great to see All Backs Dane Coles and Sam Whitelock on the field getting some game time. And the Ranfurly Shield is on the line on Saturday when the third placed Hawkes Bay Magpies take on Tasman, the Premiership leaders at the moment.

Brian and Scott wrapped up their report with a look at the All Blacks as they prepare in Australia to head off to play the USA in a fortnight’s time, before travelling on to come up against Wales, Italy, Ireland and then France.
