The Gold FM Rugby Report with Harcourts Gold Star on Monday began with Scott Day, Thames Valley RFU Rugby Development Officer, and Brian Gentil looking at the rep game last weekend with Thames Valley Under 18’s playing King Country, on TV too Scott said. They lost at Owen Delaney Park 27 - 0, and are back on the field again on Friday with another against Northland, and the Emerging Players have a game on Saturday in Waihi on Saturday which Scott will talk more about on Friday.
Round 4 of the Heartland Competition was held over the weekend with the Thames Valley Swampfoxes heading to Greymouth to play West Coast. The final score was 27 - 8 to Thames Valley leaving them tied for first on 15 points with Mid Canterbury, who they meet at Boyd Park this Saturday. Scott mentioned if anyone wants tickets they will have to go to the TVRFU offices in Paeroa so they can make sure they have the necessary Covid 19 protocols in place. Scott said it would be great to see a good turnout of locals to support the Swampfoxes in this top of the table clash.
Brian and Scott ran through the results of the other Heartland games and then checked out the NPC games, sadly with no Auckland sides taking part anymore after the lockdown level 3 meant they couldn’t travel out of Auckland, and teams couldn’t go there either. Wellington beat Canterbury 35 - 30 on Friday night and Hawkes Bay were too strong for Tasman retaining the Ranfurly Shield at McLean Park in Napier winning 34 - 22 in a hard fought match.
Brian and Scott talked about Waikato women’s win 22 - 20 in the final of the Farah Palmer Cup over Canterbury, a well deserved win after being behind at half time.
And there were some interesting games in the World Cup qualifying matches played over the weekend with Canada being knocked out of the 2023 France hosted competition after losing 33 - 24 to Chile. And Uruguay are through after beating the USA, who now meet Chile in a two legged tie next year to see who qualifies.
