Gold FM Fire Call Out

There were six jobs covered in this week’s Gold FM Fire Call Out. Brian Gentil spoke with Chief Fire Officer Moe Stevens from Waihi Fire and Rescue, starting with a call last Tuesday October 12, at 11.10 pm to Kimberley Rd in Waihi where there was a garage fire. Moe said unfortunately the garage was gutted, and luckily it didn’t spread to the house. No-one was injured.

Late on Thursday night, October 14, at 11 pm they were called out to assist with a medical situation.

On Saturday 16 October the team was at the Waihi RSA having their midyear Christmas Celebration when, as often happens when they have a function, the siren went off. They headed to Queens Head on State Highway 2 at 5.15 pm to a car crash. A car heading north into the Karangahake Gorge had rolled and ended up in a paddock, missing fences, gates and road barriers in the process, and very luckily Moe said. The driver was taken to hospital by ambulance, and the car is probably beyond repair.

Then at 10.30 pm on Saturday night Waihi Fire & Rescue received another call out, this time to the car park at Mitre 10 Waihi where someone had lit a cabbage tree. Firefighters managed to save the tree.

And at 7.30 am on Sunday morning, October 17, they were called to assist with a medical situation but got stood down before they left the station. Then at 9.15 am they were called again, to the same medical situation, and they helped with landing the rescue helicopter while there.
