Commemorations for Waihi Armistice 2018 on the way
Plans are underway for Waihi Armistice centennial commemorations to be held in November.
The Waihi Memorial Hall was formally opened in November 1958 to serve as a tribute to those miners who ‘have finished their last shift’ and as a war memorial hall ‘in memory of those who served that we may be free’. The hall celebrates its 60th birthday this November.
An army of volunteers is hard at work to bring together a range of Armistice-related activities as well as a birthday occasion for the hall. Waihi Heritage Vision is coordinating and actively working towards these events.
Images and accompanying text will be mounted in the Memorial Hall from Monday 15 October — Friday, November 16.
Schools, organisations and individuals are invited to take the opportunity to visit to learn more about Waihi/Karangahake/Waikino World War One stories.
