Media Release: Coromandel MP Scott Simpson

Disappointing but not surprising is how Coromandel MP Scott Simpson has described NZ Thoroughbred Racing’s decision to stop racing at Thames.

“The Thames Racing Club has a long and proud tradition and I’m sorry this decision has been flagged and looks almost certain to mean an end to thoroughbred horse racing in Thames.”

Thames is one of 10 venues not allocated a license for the 2019/20 racing year and that doesn’t come as a surprise as this year’s New Year’s race meeting was held in Te Aroha.

“I’ll be talking to NZ Thoroughbred Racing and the local Thames Racing Club about the implications for us here in Thames. There are obvious questions to be answered about what it means for the future of the Thames Racing Club and the race course.”

“In the meantime I’m pleased that the club will continue to race in Te Aroha.”
