Hauraki Mayor John Tregidga called in to talk Council Matters from a Skills Highway Roadshow Breakfast in Thames.

Some 43% of New Zealand's adult population are lacking in literacy skills and 51% lack numeracy skills which surprised the Mayor. He said we don't track too bad compared to other countries in the western world, which also surprised him. Good numeracy and literacy skills makes a huge improvement in people's confidence and performance he said.

The Long Term Plan process is going through a consultation process and submissions will close next Monday. A lot of forms have been picked up and the cut in mowing of berms in Waihi and proposed cut in funding for GO Waihi and Positive Paeroa have caused some concerns but generally the feedback's pretty good, the Mayor said.

Anzac services will be celebrated across the district on Anzac Day. "It's going to be a big day, as usual. The weather's looking good and I'm expecting a big turn out," Mayor Tregidga said.
