Expect delays through Karangahake Gorge until slip is cleared
Contractors are clearing the slip made up of boulders, some the size of small cars that closed SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi through the Karangahake Gorge yesterday.
The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that SH2 Paeroa to Waihi, Karangahake Gorge will be open to one lane under stop/go management until further notice.
Engineers are assessing the stability of the site and are working as hard as they can to get the job done as soon as possible. There is some material that came down yesterday still in place to act as a barrier to allow one lane to operate safely.
What is currently unknown is how much more loose material remains above the slip site, and whether or not more rocks might come down.
Until all assessments have been completed and the NZTA is satisfied they can re-open the road safely to two lanes they will continue to operate with one lane under stop/go management into the working week.
Motorists are asked to delay their journeys and use an alternative route.
