Helicopters to the Rescue

The Westpac 2 Rescue Helicopter had another busy weekend covering a wide area and attending eight call outs from Friday to Monday.

Friday, June 1 - 12.12 am Colville Channel
Crew tasked by Maritime Police to assist in a search and rescue operation after the sighting of three flares. An extensive search was conducted between Channel Island, Fletcher Bay and Tryphena Harbour, however there were no significant findings. Westpac 2 was stood down and returned to base.

11.25 am Te Hana
Crew tasked to Te Hana to assist patients involved in a head on collision. Unfortunately the driver of one vehicle died. Crew assisted the other driver, a male in his 20’s, who suffered multiple injuries. He was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.

Saturday, June 2
10.52 am Waiheke Island
Crew tasked to Onetangi to assist a male patient in his 70’s suffering a medical complaint. He was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a moderate condition.

11.10 pm Thames Airfield
Crew tasked to Thames Airfield to assist a male patient in his 20’s involved in a motor vehicle accident and suffering a suspected broken leg. His extraction from the vehicle was prolonged due to him being totally encased and trapped. He was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition as low cloud prevented safe transportation to Waikato Hospital.

Sunday, June 3
10.07 am W2 Waiheke Island
Crew tasked to Waiheke to assist a female patient in her 50’s who had suffered a fall. Westpac 2 returned to base due to poor weather. The air desk was notified and crew was stood down.

11.36 am W2 Cooks Beach
Crew tasked to Cooks Beach to assist a male patient in his 60’s suffering a medical complaint. He was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition. The patient was flown around the Coromandel Peninsula due to thunder storms over the ranges.

Monday, June 4 
9.55 am W2 Kerepehi
Crew tasked to Kerepehi, near Paeroa, to assist a female patient in her 80’s who had suffered a fall. She was found unresponsive and RSI was performed by ambulance before the crew’s arrival. The local fire service cut down a tree to clear a landing zone for Westpac 2. The patient was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

6.50 pm W2 Waiheke Island
Crew tasked to Onetangi to assist a female patient in her 70’s suffering a medical complaint. She was flown to Auckland City Hospital (condition unknown at time of writing).
