The politics of youth with Joshua and Dakota

Posted 13 March 2019 by Gold FM in Council Matters and Education

A chance meeting at the Hauraki District Council Representation Review Hearing resulted in an invitation for Joshua Mason and Dakota Sinclair to join Brian Gentil in the Gold FM studio to talk politics.

Waihi locals Joshua and Dakota are 18 years old and both have a keen interest in politics. It's not often we meet youths who are interested enough in politics to go out of their way to attend council meetings so getting them in for a chat regarding their aspirations and opinions about the issues that are important to them seemed like a good idea.

From dreaming of being Prime Minister when he was younger Joshua has changed focus to wanting to get more youth involved with local government. For Dakota, the Beehive is his ultimate goal but his excitement for his home town of Waihi also dominates his perspective.

Attending the recent Representation Review and hearing residents speak about their opinions and concerns expanded both Joshua and Dakota's perspectives.

It was refreshing and heartening to meet two young men who are thinking about their communities, their country and a future where their fellow Kiwis are of paramount importance.
