Mad World - Gary Jules live

Posted 11 March 2012 by Gold FM in Music

Do you remember the ad on New Zealand TV that promoted 'Drive Safely Over The Holidays'? Were you thinking what's that song? It's familiar, but it's not the original version, and who is that singing it?

Well, it was Gary Jules and his version also appeared in the soundtrack to the 'Donnie Darko' movie.

The original was written by Roland Orzabal and sung and performed by bassist Curt Smith and 'Tears For Fears'.

The song was released by the band in 1882. It was their third single and first chart hit, reaching #3 on the UK singles chart in November of that year.

Two decades later, in 2003, composers Michael Andrews and Gary Jules covered the song in a much more minimalist way and it reached #1 on the UK charts and was a hit around the world.
